It
Was Me All Along!
There I was driving
through this nice neighborhood looking at the fine homes that are
about 10 miles from my house. I was thinking to myself "wow,
it would be nice to...” I don’t know why I like driving
through nice neighborhoods. I have enjoyed it as long as I can remember.
During this drive I began to reflect on how many times I’ve
said “wow, it would be nice to...” and began to wonder,
why don’t I live in this neighborhood instead of just driving
through it once in a while. I began to go back over in my mind the
decisions that I made that brought me to the place where I am today
and I didn’t like what I discovered.
I remember thinking
"ok, I got to make a goal in order to get what I want."
So I made a goal. I made a list of what I needed to do to achieve
my goal: I got to find out more about what I’m interested
in; so I did that. I got to have a plan as to how I’m going
to achieve one of my dreams of having a nice home living in a nice
neighborhood; so I did that too. It was perfect right? Wrong. What
I failed to realize was no matter how many books I read, (and I
read a lot, between Barnes and Noble and Books a Million they have
enough of my money that I could buy the house cash) how many speakers
I heard or how many things I put down on paper nothing is going
to change unless I do. I was always getting ready to do something,
always waiting for the right moment, always preparing but never
doing.
You see we do a pretty
good job at living our lives just the way they are right now, thank
you very much. The problem with this is most people are not 100%
satisfied with the way their life is. Most people want to change
something about their lives. We want more money, we want to lose
weight, we want to find love, we want to change jobs, we want to
finish school, we want to be happy etc. Somehow there’s a
disconnect between wanting to change something about ourselves or
getting something we want. There is nothing wrong with the self-help
books, nothing wrong with the speakers, nothing wrong with the motivational
CDs or videos. The only thing that was the same was me.
I still wanted to watch
TV when I knew I could have been doing something else to put me
closer to my goal, I still wanted to relax instead of working out.
I still wanted to do all the things that I use to do and still
reach my goal. An amazing thing happened, nothing! There is nothing
wrong with doing all of that other stuff but you have to do it in
moderation there have to be a balance in your life. The mistake
I made was to think that I could keep doing the same things and
get a different result. Life doesn’t work this way. To get
what you want in life you have to do something different and the
sooner you do it and stick with it, the sooner you will see change.
Here are three things that you can do right now to start the ball
rolling towards your goals.
First -
Write your goals down and the date that you want to achieve this
goal (within reason) and put it where you can see it before you
go to bed and when you get up in the morning and at work like your
desk.
Second -
Do one thing different each day that would move you toward your
goal. If you want to lose 20 lbs. you might want to look in the
phone book at the different gyms in your area.
Third - Be
consistent, stick with it. Sometime you are not going to feel like
doing this or that but if you stick with it success will soon stick
to you!
