Are You Goal Sitting or Setting Goals?

It’s ok to want to achieve your dreams, desires and aspirations in life. If you plan on achieving them you have to have a goal, but please don’t set one! What I mean by setting a goal is writing down what you want, with a list of tasks you have to get done and deadlines. Here’s why you shouldn’t set goals. I am more and more convinced that when you set a goal, images of all the things you have to do by when pops in your head. How does that image make you feel? Better yet, when you write down a list of fifty things that you have to do to achieve your goal, how does that make you feel?

Here’s what you do, the next time that you feel like you want to accomplish a goal have a mental picture in your mind of what you want to accomplish and keep it there. Think about this picture everyday until it automatically becomes a part of your thinking. Now on a regular basis accomplish a task in conjunction with what’s is in your mind. For example, if you want to lose weight, today you might find out how far is the nearest gym from your home. The next thing you may want to do is find out how much is a membership. You do not have to complete a task everyday, but you should take steps that will move you closer to your desired outcome. If you want to accomplish your goal by a certain time, have the timeframe in your mind too. The reason for constantly thinking about your goal is that it helps keep what you want to accomplish fresh on your mind. The fresher your goal is in your mind, the more likely you will take action towards achieving it, the more action you take, the closer you are to reaching the outcome you desire, it’s like a cycle.

The amazing thing about having a mental picture of what you want to accomplish is that it’s easier to actually take action when your goal is on your mind all the time. You don’t have a long “to do list” of things to look at. It’s ok to make notes about the next item that you want to work on. After you completed the item write it down; this way you can go back and look at all you have accomplished, this will motivate you to keep going. When people see a list of tasks with deadlines most people will feel like they are under pressure to get things done. Being under pressure isn’t a good feeling and makes you less likely to accomplish what you set out to do in the first place.

Goal setting shouldn’t be something you have to make yourself to do. You should be excited about the next thing you do that moves you closer to what you want. Keep in mind that you shouldn’t be sitting around not taking action, you have to be proactive. Don’t goal set or goal sit, but if you do the things I mentioned, and even if you are sitting, you will be sitting pretty.
