Want to
try something different for the New Year? Here are some things that
we all can do if we commit to it.
It’s
been said that in order to create a new habit for ourselves it takes
about a month (for some people it’s longer) of consistent
daily repetition in order for the habit to take hold. After the
thirty days you don’t have to try to remember to do it, it
will be automatic, you will do it without thinking about it, it
would just become a part of your regular routine, just like brushing
your teeth.
Ok, that
being said, think of one habit you would like to develop for yourself
such as being on time to work, exercising regularly, or reading
something constructive, just to name a few. Now it’s important
to remember two things: first you have to have a positive attitude
about the habit you want to cultivate. When you go to do the thing
that you want to make a habit try not to tell yourself how much
you hate doing this or you wish you were doing something else, you
get the picture. Second, you must do it every day. Repetition, repetition,
repetition and more repetition. You can’t expect to do something
once and then four days later do it again and then a week later
do it again and expect it to be a habit, it doesn’t work that
way. Oh yeah, did I mention repetition?
Choose something
that you want to make a habit or at least something that you know
you should make a habit that will benefit you. For example, do I
like getting up early studying for school? Not particularly, but
I know setting some time away each day for study will have its benefits
like discipline, good grades, etc. Do I enjoy exercising? Are you
kidding? However, I know the health benefits of regular exercise.
Pick something
out, use the techniques above and if it works for you choose something
else and keep going. Just think how far you will be by next year
this time.
